This series comprises general subject files of the Lands for Settlement Branch of Lands and Survey.  Many files from the series were destroyed by a fire in the Hope Gibbons building in 1952.  Those which have survived are charred, water-damaged and sometimes incomplete.
The files appear to all be marked by an 'SP' prefix to the record number, indicating that they belong to this "special" sequence of registered files, although this cannot be clearly established due to the number of missing or incomplete files.
One register to this series is held in series 18514 [former archives reference LS59].  From that volume the record numbers in square brackets in the item list for this series have been inferred.  Notes in the register indicate that it was only one in a number of volumes of registers, the remainder of which are not held by Archives New Zealand.  Very few of the files held from this series are documented in that register.  Further, the majority of files which are recorded in the register are not held.  This provides evidence that the majority of these 'SP' files have not survived.
