This is an artificial series created by Archives New Zealand to describe a group of maps received as a single accession from the Lands and Survey Department.  It comprises NZMS [New Zealand Mapping Service] maps.  The NZMS appear to have employed a series system to classify different types of maps of New Zealand and neighbouring areas.  Thus maps are grouped into NZMS 1 series, NZMS, 2 series, NZMS 3 series and so on, with each series having its own characteristics.  For instance NZMS 260 contains topographic maps, using a scale of 1:50,000, NZMS 262 contains topographic maps, using a scale of 1:250,000 and NZMS 242 contains topographic maps, using a scale of 1:500,000.
Maps transferred as part of this accession are predominantly from NZMS series 1 and NZMS series 2.  Subject matter of the maps include Ruapehu, Puketutu, Puketawai and Te Kuiti.
