This series describes papers relating to the Naval and Military Land Claims Commissions of 1896 and 1910.  The series is comprised predominantly of claimant submissions, but also includes reports, indices and papers relating to certain claims.
The first Commission was established by legislation in 1896 authorising the review of land claims declined earlier on technicalities.  Claims were forwarded through Commissioners of Crown Lands to a reviewing Commissioner appointed by the Governor.  
A further review was held in 1910, conducted by stipendiary magistrates reporting through the Department of Lands and Survey to the Minister of Lands.  The records of the 1896 review were incorporated with those of 1910.

            [seriesRestrictionReason] => There are no restrictions on the content of the items in this series.  However a small number of files have been water damaged and are currently awaiting conservation treatment.  The affected files are numbered 1226 and 1301-1309.  Those files are restricted for preservation reasons under section 49 (1) (a) of the Public Records Act 2005.
