This series comprises 63 submissions that were presented to the Manapouri Select Committee during the Manapouri Commision of Inquiry into raising the level of two large lakes (Te Anau and Manapouri) for the purposes of generating electricity for smelting aluminium near Bluff.
An annotation in the paper-based finding aids for the Legislative Department describes this series as "1970-72 papers, including Manapouri Petition Committee 1970, to be interfiled, when rest of 1970-72 material arrives, in series 1." Legislative Department records transferred after this series have been captured by Archives New Zealand under the agency ABBS (Legislative Department 1912-1985) and these records have not been interfiled.
Some records relating to the Manapouri Commission also reside in series 8443.
