This series comprises the only surviving fragments of the Crown Lands outward letterbooks.   The series appears to have been in use from 1858 until the early twentieth century, although the majority of the letterbooks were destroyed by a fire in the Hope Gibbons building in 1952. Three of the surviving four items are fire damaged.
This series complemented the Crown Land inward letterbooks held in series 18257 [former archives reference LS2].
Item 1, a miscellaneous letterbook from 1877, is the only undamaged item in this series.  It deals with miscellaneous correspondence largely arising out of the abolition of the provinces.  It contains letters to Chief Surveyors and local authorities, principally in Otago and Southland.
Item 2 appears to contain letters to other Lands and Survey officials.
Most of the entries in item 3 are illegible due to water damage.
Item 4 contains a partial index to a letter book.
