	This series description was initially compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. Prior to this the Commissioner's inwards correspondence files were described at box level in the Record Group as Maori Affairs - Maori Land Administration Series 5 (MA-MLA5/1). Each record has been listed individually, and the series is now fully integrated into the GAIMS system (accession W310).

	Researchers should note that although the Register of Commissioner's Inwards Correspondence (series 18198) records 17 letters for 1888, these do not appear to be extant.

	This series contains the inwards correspondence received by the Commissioner, Wellington Land District, appointed under the Native Lands Administration Act 1886.

	The correspondence is arranged by an annual single number system of classification (with the prefix ‘N.L.A.’), and include notices of objections to the lease or purchase of Maori land; requests for acceptance of a lease or purchase agreement, usually on a pre-printed form; certification of the Chief Judge, Native Land Court, of bona fide purchases and leases as notified to the Commissioner; and requests for exemption from having land fall under the management of a Commissioner.

		Form B: [Native Land Court Chief] Judge’s Certificate, Section 24 (purchase);
	

		Form B1: [Native Land Court Chief] Judge’s Certificate, Section 24 (lease);
	

		Form C: Notice by a Purchaser under Sub-section (b), Section 25;
	

		Form E: Notice under Sub-section (d), Section 25, by a lessee.


	Some letters are written in Te Reo Maori and generally these have a contemporary English translation attached. Some correspondence also includes the names of affected hapu and block owners, which is not recorded in the title of each item.
