This series consists of two foreign summons books from Wellington Central Police Station.
The following notes are part of the original documentation for the Police [P] Record Group:
When a summons was received at a police station it was recorded in a summons book. These were used for recording:
(a) Receipt of summonses from the local Court; or in the case of the ‘Foreign’ book, any summons from another centre
(b) To whom sent for service
(c) Return of summons (served or unserved) and further transit.
‘Private’ summons books recorded summonses other than police matters. To avoid unnecessary recording, the Court Orderly, when typing a summons, recorded a carbon copy on the back of a special cyclostyled sheet. The front of it was already blocked out ready for recording the transit of the summons. This sheet was then entered up and filed in folders.
Summons were entered using an annual number system.
