Crime books were used to record convictions and particulars of the penalties and sentences heard at Court. Details included:
(a) Type of offence
(b) Where the offence was committed
(c) Date and hour when offence was committed
(d) On whom
(e) Occupation and address of offender
(f) Date and hour the crime was reported to the police
(g) If a robbery, description of property stolen and value
(h) Name of persons offending or suspected of
(i) Description of offender
(j) If warrant issued, particulars etc
(k) Steps taken and information sent to
(l) Name of officer in charge of the enquiry
(m) General remarks
Crime books usually contained an alphabetical index, according to offender, and gave a page reference to the relevant entry.
