[authenticityNote] => Although only one item is listed in this series, it is clear from the associated Department of Lands and Survey file [Archives Ref: ABWN 6095 W5021/620, 22/4643/10] that numerous photographs and the film were commissioned by the Department for the same purpose, i.e. to provide a visual record of work undertaken. The dates for the series are based on information from this file. The film, "The New Green Land" was commissioned by the Department of Lands and Survey, and produced by the National Film Unit, who included the film in their catalogues. Therefore both agencies have been listed as creating agencies. W5483 - This print of "The New Green Land" was held in the Department of Lands and Survey, New Plymouth Office as an archive copy. Viewing copies of the film were made available by the Library of the Department of Lands and Survey, Head Office.

The Department wished to create a record that promoted the Land Development Scheme to the wider public, and to create a record that would be of historic interest to Departmental staff in the future [1].
The National Film Unit was approached by the Department of Lands and Survey in March 1969, with a proposal to film progress of land development on the Whakatau site over a period of 10 years. The initial project was scaled back, and footage was shot in 1971 for a National Film Unit production titled "The New Green Land".
The National Publicity Studios and private photographers were also commissioned to produce still photographs of the development work.
The resulting visual record was managed by the Library within the Department of Lands and Survey, Head Office.
