The records in this series have been arranged into six subseries - 10/1 Registered Files ZWR System, 10/2 Unregistered Files ZWR System, 10/3 Registered Files ZMR System, 10/4 Unregistered Files ZMR System, 10/5 Published Material, and 10/6 Miscellaneous.
The 'Registered Files - ZWR System' subseries covers the period from April 1917 to July 1920. It contains files documenting the day to day functions of the war records section in its collection of reports, diaries, historical material, photographs, art, war trophies, museum material, and publications. There are also personal files.
The 'Unregistered Files - ZWR System' subseries covers the period from February 1915 to November 1919. It contains a variety of material related to that in subseries 1.
The 'Registered Files - ZMR System' subseries covers the period from April 1911 to June 1919. It contains a collection of diaries, statements, and reports about operations by NZEF Units in both France and Palestine.
The 'Unregistered Files - ZMR System' subseries covers the period from April to December 1915. It mainly consists of the operational reports of NZ and A Division at Gallipoli. The exception is item 20, which is a diary account of the formation and mobilisation of the 1st and 2nd Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
The 'Published Material' subseries covers the period from May 1913 to June 1923. It contains official and unofficial publications, including a large number of reinforcement troopship journals.
The 'Miscellaneous' subseries covers the period from 1914 to 1919. It contains a variety of material, including photographs and maps.
The use of ZWR system refers to War Records and the use of ZMR system refers to Miscellaneous Records.
