	 This series is comprised of Nelson High Court probated case files. The files are arranged numerically by a running number.

	

	Though the majority of Nelson probates created between 1891-1968 are in this series, a small number of probates dating from 1891and 1907 can be found in series 17070.

	Probate files contain all the legal information required for the granting of probate on a will, so usually include a copy of the deceased person's will. Not everyone who made a will has a probate file.  If a person died without making a will, then there may be a file of Letters of Administration, containing the legal documentation required to administer the deceased person's estate. A person's will is usually probated through the High Court nearest to where they were living before their death. A person may be registered more than once.
