	This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. The series dates are derived from the dates of the holdings.

	The series includes specifications and plans for various work including harbour works, lighthouses and beacons, jetties and wharves, reclamation, graving docks and slipways. Files includes newspaper advertisements, contract documents, specifications, acceptances and plan records.

	Documents of contracts were let by the department through the Public Works Department. A senior engineer of the Public Works Department acted as chief marine engineer and supervised the drawing up of contracts, letting and the associated works.  The plans and specifications for contracts were drawn up by Works under instructions from the Marine Department.  The documents were transferred with Public Works records, but were formally the property of the Marine Department. 

	An index to these plans and specifications is located in the cartographic card index (located in Reading Room at Archives New Zealand, Wellington). 

	A numerical index of marine plans is located in Record Group series M19 (REPRO 42-46).

	Photographs require that gloves are worn when viewing.
