Telegrams were initially filed with ordinary inwards despatches in Record Group series G1 (series 8604).  From 1879 a separate series of telegrams was kept by the Governor. 
This series is a mixture of a variety of types of communication relating to the transmission and receipt of telegrams. Item G5/1 consists of a bound volume into which forms of telegrams received have been pasted. It is not complete and contains telegrams received from the Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Governors of South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland, and the Admiral, Sydney. Contents of this volume overlap with that of item G5/2. 



From 1882 to September 1897 (see item G5/2 and part of item G5/3), this series contained several types of communications relative to telegrams received from the Secretary of State. Up to 1887, there are despatches from the Secretary of State, reporting the transmission of a telegram only - these are unnumbered. From 1887, original telegrams on Post Office forms are also included, as well as working papers deciphering telegrams in code. There are also a number of other papers, a few drafts of reply telegrams, acknowledgements by the Secretary of State, and general correspondence with others, relative to the subject of the original telegram. 



From 1892 to 1895, copies of forms sent by the Governor to the Secretary of State acknowledging the receipt of a telegram and repeating the text are included. These are all numbered and registered in the registers to correspondence in Record Group series G22 (series 16577).
This series was initially made up of inwards telegrams (from 1879-1897).  Outwards telegrams to the Secretary of State were filed in a separate series, G27 (series 16582).
From September 1897, all telegrams sent by the Governor to the Secretary of State were listed in the registers of inwards correspondence (items G22/4-11) and the telegrams were still filed in G27 (series 16582).  From 1898 all the telegrams to and from the Secretary of State were filed together in this series, G5. 



Items G5/89-114 are the Governor-General's own copies of telegrams received from, and sent to, the Secretary of State, Governor-Generals of other Dominions, and the Administrator of Samoa.
