            [authenticityNote] => This series description was compiled as part of a project to capture the finding aids created prior to 1987 into the GAIMS system. The dates of this series are based on the dates of holdings. Provenance: All the archives of the Superintendent and Provincial Secretary Offices prior to 1856 were destroyed in a fire which burnt down the provincial government's office buildings. After the abolition of the province in 1876 the archives of the Council, Superintendent, Secretary, and Treasurer seem to have been transferred directly to the Colonial Secretary's Department. It is fairly certain they remained in the custody of this Department, however it does not appear that anyone ever examined them. No inventory of the archives was made before 1919. From this Department (later known as the Department of Internal Affairs) the majority of the archives were transferred to the National Archives at various dates, between 1926 and 1952. The archives of the Provincial Engineer, Solicitor, and other provincial officials are missing without trace.

These include letters from officials of the General Government and Provincial Governments. Those from General Government officials (most of which are from the Colonial Secretary) contain instructions to the Superintendent, comments on his proceedings, delegations of authority, and remarks on the legislation and proceedings of the Provincial Council. Many of these letters relate to land purchases (particularly the Porangahau, Waitotara, Rangitikei, and Manawatu blocks) and the setting aside of native reserves. They also deal with immigration and settlement, the development of communications, the financial relations between the General and Provincial Governments, and the defence of the province during the Maori wars. 



The letters from provincial officials deal with almost every aspect of provincial administration. There are reports, complaints, requests for authority and instructions, and letters justifying their conduct or measures from the officers in charge of the police, public works, gaols, hospitals, harbours, surveys, ferries, public lands, school inspection, and mental hospitals.
