	This series is comprised of the records of the 1953 Consultative Committee on Hospital Boards.

	

	[The notes that follow are a summary of the detailed description of this record series that was included in the original H Record Group documentation. This information has not been captured in GLADIS.]

	

	The Consultative Committee on Hospital Boards heard submissions of evidence from government departments, hospital boards and associated organisations, private hospitals, local bodies, medical and non-medical organisations and private individuals.

	

	Evidence was classified according to the Committee's Order of Reference as follows:

	

	1. Changes to be made in the present functions, powers and duties of hospital boards, with a view to providing adequate hospital services; whether there should be a reduced number of hospital districts, each centred on a Base hospital with modern equipment, facilities and specialist services.

	

	2. At what centres should Base hospitals be maintained, developed and what area should be served by each. Changes to be made if each hospital district is not to be centred on a Base hospital.

	

	3. Whether change should be made to the present basis of representation and method of election; whether members of hospital boards should be appointed by the Government - to what extent and on what basis; whether any changes should be made in the size of the Hospital Boards; whether any change should be made should be made in the term of office of board members; if hospital districts centred on Base hospitals, whether subsidiary hospitals within the area should have the services of local committees of management and if so how these committees should be constituted and what their powers, functions and duties should be.

	

	4. The system of hospital finance and steps which should be taken to provide for more effective and efficient control of expenditure.

	

	5. Other matters raised by witnesses.

	

	Members of the Committee were H.E. Barrowclough (Chairman), Dr. P.P. Lynch, Dr. D.S. Wylie, Mr C.A.Campion, Mr H.S. Williams and Mr H.W.Shore.

	

	Proceedings were held at Wellington, Auckland and Whangarei (including Gisborne) between June - August 1953.
