This volume has the potential to be a valuable resource for researchers for the following reasons: Not all Marine Department records of note from this period have survived, so in some cases, these legal opinions may be the only surviving record of Marine Department policy and action. In addition, the volume provides subject-based access to those Marine Department activities requiring a legal opinion and could therefore be a useful starting point for researchers.
Each opinion is annotated with a relevant file reference (presumably series 7910 - central filing system files), allowing researchers to proceed from the volume to the files (if extant). There is an index at the front of the volume, which provides alphabetical access to the opinions by subject and geographical location.
