            [history] => In addition to having the function of granting mortgages as had its predecessor, the Mortgage Corporation of New Zealand (AAPN), the State Advances Corporation was also to administer the Housing Act of 1919. This Act provided for the construction, renting and administration of state rental homes by the State Advances Corporation. A Housing Construction Branch was created in 1936 to undertake construction of state rental homes. Houses were initially erected by the State Advances Corporation's Housing Construction Branch. The Housing Division of the Ministry of Works later assumed this function. However, responsibility for the administration of these newly constructed dwellings remained with the State Advances Corporation from 1936 until the establishment of Housing Corporation of New Zealand in 1974. 

Once constructed, some units were rented, but others were sold on behalf of the State. Older houses were also acquired over the years for rental purposes and a pool of homes was established for the purpose of housing state employees on transfer. Loans were made to local authorities for the erection of units for pensioner accommodation. Under authority of the Rural Housing Act 1939, the Corporation also made loans to local councils for re-lending to farmers wishing to build new houses or renovate existing ones. Minutes from this series include reports of the Mortgage Loans Committee of the Housing Branch giving statistics on loans made to various bodies under authority of the Housing Act and Finance Act etc. Also included are statistical reports on the sale of these state- owned homes, arrears of rents paid and sale of old "D.L.'s" [unknown acronym], perhaps referring to the older homes gradually acquired by the Corporation. 

From November 1963, reports relating to state rental housing and decisions of the Mortgage Loans Committee appear in the Minutes of the Board of Management of the State Advances Corporation under the heading "Statistical Submissions - Housing" rather than in their own volumes (see successor series 8146). It is not known if the Housing Branch of the State Advances Corporation continued to exist in the same form at this point.
