            [history] => The School Commissioners were charged with the administration of the extensive education reserves throughout the Canterbury District, the revenue from which was devoted to the purposes of primary education.  The Steward of Reserves were required to conduct annual inspections of the properties and oversee some administration of the reserves.  These guardbooks contain copies of leases issued. Each lease has a number on the top right hand corner of the page and the relevant education reserve is marked in red on the lease document.  That number relates to maps of the district education reserves - one of those registers is in series 12561 item CH325/251.
