Information given in the indexes includes land description, such as Parish name, section and lot number, name of grantee and Crown Grant volume and folio number. The Crown Grant volume number is the new number used in series 1142.
This index was evidently created at about the same time as the volumes in series 1142 were numbered prior to being microfilmed. Its prime concern was records of land within the North Auckland Land District, so that Crown grants for the South Auckland district were merely recorded in volume/folio order as they were found, and then filed at the back of the book, rather than being included in the main index. Unfortunately for users, this division was not entirely accurate: for instance, Hokianga Parish is found in the "South Auckland" part of the index being indisputably within the North Auckland district. 



Cancelled grants were not indexed, nor were some of the loose pages and fragments in some of the volumes. 



Within the "South Auckland" section, there appears to be a page missing, as there are no entries for volume 30 ff 119-148. 



It seems that grants of title to Maori Land were not indexed at the same time as others. Some volumes are marked to indicate this: "Not yet indexed", and then subsequently amended to show that the indexing had been done. (Volume 31's note was not amended, but the volume is indeed included in the index.)
