The portfolio for Disarmament and Arms Control was established in 1987 under the auspices of the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament and Arms Control Act 1987. The Act established the Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control ( PACDAC) and made the Minister the Chair of the committee. The portfolio reflected New Zealand's evolving attitude to international relationships and international conflicts. It demonstrated a move towards a greater emphasis on global security and a non violent approach to the settlement of disputes.
The portfolio was disestablished in 2011 by the National- led coalition government following the findings of the Public Advisory Committee on Disarmament and Arms Control
