Records containing adoption information are restricted indefinitely, as required by section 23 of the Adoption Act 1955. An archivist may provide a transcript of an entry providing that there is no 'adoption endorsement'.
The BDM registers are restricted indefinitely. Those researchers seeking access to the local registers will require the written authority of the Registrar-General to access specified records.
Registered files containing sensitive personal information are restricted for 100 years from the file closure to protect personal privacy.
Some records annotated as 'M' are under review. Researchers wishing to access the files should contact Archives New Zealand to clarify access conditions.
