π Compensation Court Ngaruawahia - RO Stewart, Resident Magistrate, Lower Waikato, Port Waikato - 1 February 1866 - forwarding copies of letter relating to dispute between Ngati Tipa and Ngatinaho (Kukutai and Te Wheoro, respectively) concerning right to eel weirs at Whangape - subsequent correspondence from William Searancke, Resident Magistrate, Central Waikato explaining situation that after confiscation of Ngatipo land, subsequently eel weirs on Whangape river taken possession of by Te Wheoro with permission of Mr Fox, then Native Minister but there is ancestral claim by Waata Kukutai and Tamehana Tunui. Says Te Wheoro agreed to abide by decision of Compensation Court. Also copy of letter from Ngaruawahia dated 19 February from William Searancke stating dispute had escalated to threatened armed conflict, though subsequently became peaceful. Asks whether appropriate Natives allowed to retain government arms and ammunition. [9 sheets, one in te reo Maori with translation]
