๐Ÿ“‚ Compensation Court Ngaruawahia - James Mackay to the Native Minister, Wellington [copy of letter] - 7 February 1867 - report on the effect of Tauranga "hostilities" on local Mฤori and involvement or lack of involvement of Ngatiraukawa, Ngatihaua. Ngatiraukawa settlements within kati or aukati, within which no Government official permitted to enter. Discusses meetings with Tioriori, who agreed his people would protect local Pakeha. Natana acts as messenger, travelling to Patetere. Mackay travelled to Maungatautari and the Upper Thames to ascertain state of affairs, then to Matamata. Heard Pirirakau tribe women and children had come over Te Aroha range. Met Riki and others of te Ngatihaua at Ohineroa. Tamati and two others wished to go to Tauranga to fight as believed William Thompson [Tamihana] had made peace for the Waikato and Thames Districts only. Discusses with them reports from Tauranga regarding results of battle. Mentions Wikitoria Thompson, widow of Wiremu Tamihana, her son Tana Thompson, Heta Tauranga, Te Pakara and several of Ngatihaua tribe now near Hangatiki at tangi for Tamihana. Visited Peria, found Reweti Waikato and loyal Ngatihaua (Raihi's people) who planned to assemble at Peria to resist attacks by Ngatiraukawa on local Europeans. Tiriori and his people to remain at Maungatautari to warn Government of hostile movements by Ngatiraukawa or Ngatimaniapoto. Records also report from Mr Mainwaring from his visit to Te Kopua on the Waipa that a large meeting was planned at Tokangamutu to tangi for Tamihana. Takerei te Rau reports that Rewi proposed driving cattle to Alexandra to sell, and Matutana objected. Reports there are Europeans living within the Hauhau Aukati, including deserters from the army, storekeepers, horsestealers, escaped criminals etc, suggests the desirability of removing such characters from amongst the Natives. 22 page report]
