Access conditions
(1.)ย Record lists:
Access to the record list for this series is open.
(2.) Access to records:
Archives New Zealand is vetting all files in this series.ย Refer to the record list for the series for the current access status of individual files.
Records remain restricted until vetted and marked as โopenโ access, when they become available for viewing.ย All requests to access restricted records should be directed to Archives New Zealand in the first instance.
Explanatory notes
Following the death of Rt. Hon. Sir Walter Nash, administrative responsibility for this collection rests with the Chief Archivist.ย Access to all restricted records is therefore subject to the permission of the Chief Archivist (contact point: Research Services, Archives New Zealand).
Please note that records in this series will require initial vetting before they may be issued.ย On receipt of access requests records will be vetted and, as checks are completed, the relevant restriction status will be updated on the record list.

Note on access to official/non-official documents
This vetting process has been established in order to meet the recommendations in the Cabinet Manual Chapter 8 and Cabinet Circular CO (05) 9. The Manual and Circular recommend that official documentation should be appropriately restricted, to ensure that conditions of access reflect the sensitivity of the information, and that these conditions of access should mirror the principles and provisions set out in the Official Information Act 1982. Requests for access to the records are to follow the checking process for official documents as approved by Cabinet and set out in the Cabinet Manual and Cabinet Circular.
The vetting process will confirm whether or not a record contains official documents.
The Chief Archivist will provide access to both official records and non-official records (such as party political papers and personal documents) as appropriate, depending on the nature of their contents.
Research requests for restricted records should be directed in the first instance to:
Research Services, Archives New Zealand Head Office, PO Box 12050, Wellington.
Research Services will process the requests on behalf of the Chief Archivist.ย Any necessary vetting, or feedback on restrictions, will be co-ordinated through the Description and Discovery Section, Archives New Zealand Head Office.
Note for Archives staff:
1.ย Written enquiries should be processed by Research Services, working in consultation with Description and Discovery vetting staff. Guidelines are documented on Objective file 2009/1131 (Political Collections โ Procedures for Handling Research Enquiries).
2.ย In-person researchers should be provided with request form Objective A335008 to complete with details of the restricted records which they wish to access. Forms should then be treated as written enquiries (see above).
