Criteria for granting access to the Freyberg papers was re-examined in 2001 and brought in line with the Official Information Act provisions relating to personal privacy.
Files containing personal information relating to an individual are restricted for 100 years from date of birth, or 40 years from date of death, unless prior permission has been obtained from the person concerned.
To gain access to these records proof confirming a date of birth or death outside the stated restriction periods, or written permission from the access contact, will be required.
Please note that numerous files (marked in green) have now been checked and are openly accessible. However, any file marked in orange (i.e. with the restriction 'M') requires vetting by Archives New Zealand before being accessed (see access contact below). Also, a number of files in red, have been restricted for a finite period.
