The New Zealand Walkways Act 1975 provided for the establishment of a system of walking tracks throughout New Zealand for the enjoyment of the public. It outlined the control and administration of walkways on public (including those vested with local government authorities) and private land. The New Zealand Walkways Commission was set up to oversee walkways administration and to provide advice to the Government. In 1990 the Act was updated, which led to the abolition of the Commission and the Department of Conservation taking control of walkways in national and forest parks. Local authorities took more responsibility for regional and district walkways. This Act was replaced with the Walking Access Act 2008, and its purpose was to provide to the New Zealand public free, certain, enduring, and practical walking access to the outdoors (including around the coast and lakes, along rivers, and to public resources). It also provided for the establishment of the New Zealand Walking Access Commission.
