Ship registration provided proof of nationality. For some ships it was compulsory to be registered. For others it was voluntary.
When a ship was registered in New Zealand and travelled overseas, its registration gave it the protection of the New Zealand Government. This is in much the same way as a New Zealand citizen was protected while travelling overseas. The ship’s registration papers provided proof of identity like a passport does for a person.
The New Zealand Register of Ships is a list of all vessels registered in New Zealand under the Ship Registration Act 1992. The register, held in Maritime New Zealand's Wellington office, was available for inspection by the public. The Registrar of Ships was responsible for maintaining the register.
