[history] => In 1973 Oakley Hospital was completely reorganised by the Auckland Hospital Board. Wards M3 and M7 of the old Oakley Hospital became the new Oakley Hospital and the bulk of the new hospital was renamed Carrington Hospital. Each hospital had its own Medical Superintendent but much of the administration of the new Oakley Hospital was carried on by Carrington Hospital staff, to the extent that it is not altogether clear whether the new Oakley Hospital can be truly classed as a separate agency.
Oakley Hospital looks after male patients who usually come to it through the courts or prisons, or who were considered too difficult or disruptive to manage in other institutions. Future Auckland Hospital Board plans are that Oakley will no longer be run by the board as a separate hospital.
