Though the Police Station at Tapanui opened in 1867, the first official record of a policemen there is 1881 when Constable Christopher Conn was assigned. In the 1960’s a new police house was built with an attached station and lockup. In 1997 the 35 year old police station and accommodation was sold and transported out of town, and a new community policing centre was built.
