Agency Information

Further research is required regarding the establishment/disestablishment and administrative history of this agency.  Unfortunately very little is known because of a lack of published sources on District Offices and smaller rural offices of the Department of Agriculture.  Furthermore, because we only hold a few estray files from the Ranfurly Office, it is difficult to extrapolate any accurate agency or series information.

            [history] => The Department of Agriculture was formed on 31 March 1892 by the amalgamation of the staffs of the Stock and Agricultural Branches of the Department of Crown Lands. JD Ritchie, the Chief Inspector of Stock, became the first Secretary of Agriculture, with the duty 'to collect and distribute information on subjects connected with agriculture among the settlers by means of lectures and pamphlets, and generally to study and promote welfare of the farming community'. 

As part of a general restructuring of government departments in 1972, the Fisheries Management and Fisheries Research Divisions of the Marine Department were combined with the Department of Agriculture to from a Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
