The first policeman stationed on Stewart Island was Sergeant Edward Morton who was dispatched to Port William at the end of January 1867. On 6 January 1870 Morton recieved a despatch from the Head of Southland Police ordering him to relinquish the station at Port William and return to Invercargill, bringing all the government property [1].
