            [history] => The Trans-Antarctic Expedition was formed in England in 1955 with the purpose of carrying out a land crossing of the Antarctic continent in the summer of 1957-8. New Zealand provided support, led by Sir Edmund Hillary, who operated out of Scott Base. The RNZAF Antarctic Flight was formed at Wigram on 1 May 1956 with Squadron leader John R Claydon in command. Claydon, who had served since 1936, was commander of the Flight Training School. The primary role of the RNZAF flight was to carry out air reconnaissance of the Victoria glaciers to determine a suitable route to the Polar Plateau. The Flight also undertook photographic and liason flights and any emergency or special missions required by the expedition leader, Hillary. On 23 December 1957 Claydon and one of his colleagues, Cranfield, flew in a US Navy VX6 Neptune to the South Pole and the RNZAF ensign they planted there was the first new Zealand flag to fly at the South Pole. The Flight came to an end in February 1958 when the field parties returned and the crossing party was within reach of the Scott Base therefore unlikely to require air rescue services. Following Cabinet authority to continue operations in Antarctica RNZAF Flight was re-formed in 1959 under Squadron Leader Jeffs. However following an air crash New Zealand air support in the region ceased.
