	Grey River Hospital was established in Greymouth in 1866, in a building on the corner of Tainui and Guinness Streets (then known as Hospital Street) in the town - which would later become the Post Office. The Hospital was funded by a mixture of private subscriptions and public funds obtained from both the Canterbury and Nelson Provincial Governments and run by an elected Committee who had to forward an annual financial report to the County Council for approval.

	

	The first surgeon-superintendent of the Hospital, from 1866 to 1894 was Dr. Charles Lloyd Morice, who was followed in the role by his son Charles George Morice, who held the position until 1915.

	

	In 1875 a new larger wooden Hospital was built to replace the first modest building, this time in upper High Street. Later, in 1897, construction commenced on a more permanent and substantial concrete and brick replacement. This facility was gradually augmented in the first half of the twentieth century, and by the time damage caused by an earthquake in 1967 necessitated a new campus be built, the Hospital, by then known simply as Grey Hospital, had grown to include the Victoria Ward (1900), Seddon Ward (1906), Petrie Ward (1909), Nurses Home (1927), Hannan Ward (1928), Tasman Old People's Home (1925), Saltzman Ward - for tuberculosis patients (1939), McBrearty Ward - which became the town's maternity facility, O'Brien Ward (both 1940s), and new administrative and services blocks (mid-1960s).

	

	In 1968, Grey Hospital was selected as the base hospital for the newly formed West Coast Hospital Board - this regional governance structure replaced the formerly independent Grey, Buller, Inangahua, and Westland (Hokitika) Hospital Boards and the Hospital was rebuilt and substantially extended in the decades to follow, with work completed in the early 1990s. This new facility included the McBrearty, Hannan, Morice, Couston, Barclay, and Parfitt Wards.

	

	At the time of writing, in 2020, this complex was due to be superseded by the brand new Te Nikau Grey Hospital and Health Centre.
