            [history] => In 1885 a Forest and Agricultural Branch of the Lands Department was established but it was closed after two years and supervision of the Crown forests was nominally continued by the Lands Department. The Minister of Lands was also the Commissioner of Forests. In 1918 the Commission of State Forests was separated from the Minister of Lands and the following year the Forestry Department was formed, to be re-organised in 1920 as the State Forest Service, with a Director of Forestry and 5 conservators of the forests. Commissioners of Crown Lands had been ex officio conservators since the late 1880s , and in several regions they continued to hold this post until 1921. 
The State Forest Service was renamed the New Zealand Forest Service in 1950.
