            [history] => The Economics division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries was formed in 1970. In 1986 major structural changes were made within MAF and the section was reconstituted as the Economic Consultancy Unit, and became part of Policy Services Division (formerly Economics Division), within MAFCorp. The user pays principle of economic recovery was introduced and most reports were produced under contract to clients. 
The role of the division was to provide economic analysis and advice to assist the Government and industry decision -making in the agriculture and fisheries field and to report on issues which the various components of the industry brought to the attention f the Government; as well as to bring forward plans designed to stimulate output and promote efficiency or establish a greater measure of stability.
