The Land Corporation Limited came into being on the 1 April 1987, primarily to handle the Government's commercial farming and land management operations previously undertaken by the Department of Lands and Survey. The corporation operated through three subsidiaries- Landcorp Farming, Landcorp Property and Landcorp Investments. These were supported by a corporate service division which incorporated finance and other activities. 



There is no indication that the Christchurch Landcorp district office reflected the restructuring in Head Office in 1989 into the three separate divisions: the Christchurch Office carried out at various times the business functions of Landcorp Farming, and Landcorp Property (and Landcorp Investments) in the district - 

    
to develop and manage the Corporation's land for farming and allied uses, and to manage public land and property in the Corporation's own right and on behalf of other State and private owners; 
    
to manage and market the products of the land; 
    
to provide professional land management services; 
    
to develop business activities related to the Corporation's other business functions. 

Landcorp Property and Landcorp Farming shared the same office. 
In 1991 the work of administering the freeholding of leased land was centralised to the Napier Office  and the land tenure files of the Christchurch Ofice were sent to Napier.
During 1996, Knight Frank (NZ) Ltd, a privately owned company, acquired the property services subsidiary (Landcorp Property Ltd) together with its district and branch offices.  Landcorp was re-structured into a parent company and a 100 percent owned subsidiary handling respectively farming and leasing and lending activities.  Landcorp Farming Ltd was responsible for the management of a farming business and its continued development; and  Landcorp Investments Ltd  was responsible for the management and sale of a portfolio of leases and loans. Following the sale of its remaining assets Landcorp Investments Ltd was wound-up in 2004. For a period after 1996 the Christchurch Office was known as the Landcorp South Island Business Centre.
From 1996 to 2008 the office in Christchurch continued as Landcorp Farming Ltd Christchurch. It was closed in June 2008.
