            [history] => The Ministry of Forestry is responsible for providing sector services and policy advice to government. Its mission is to "promote the national interest through forestry, including wood-based industries". 

The Ministry has inherited several functions previously carried out by the New Zealand Forest Service. These include research, forestry policy advice to Government, administering appropriate forestry statutes and regulations, consultancy services, collection of statistics and training. 

Other responsibilities of a regulatory nature include protecting and enhancing opportunities for the forestry sector to do business through the provision of protection services (quarantine, health) quality assurance programmes, and rural fire administration. 

The Ministry also has a role in representing the Government's position on forestry matters in appropriate domestic and international forums, fostering cooperation amongst bodies concerned with forestry and facilitating their communication with government, and fostering the public understanding of forestry. 

These functions are undertaken by four divisions. 
The Research Division incorporates the Forest Research Institute at Rotorua and the Forestry Research Centre at Christchurch comprising about half the ministry total staffing. Policy Division provided policy advice and monitors forestry trends and prospects. Corporate Services Division provides services to meet the administrative and operational requirements of the Ministry. 

The fourth division, the Forestry Services Division provides protection services, consultancy services (including services on contract, in New Zealand and overseas) and training through two training centres, the Forestry Training Centre and the Timber Industry Trainning Centre, located at Rotarua - all on a user pays basis. 

The Regional Offices are headed by a Regional Manager who reports directly to the Assistant Secretary, Forestry Services.
