	In 1872, the Seaview Psychiatric Hospital, known then as the Seaview Lunatic Asylum, was established by the Provincial Government for the care of the mentally ill on the West Coast. It was situated on Mount Pleasant, to the north of Hokitika (also known as Seaview Terrace). 

	Prior to this, mentally unwell patients in the area had been admitted to South Spit Hospital (a ward able to accommodate 5 to 7 such patients was opened in 1866), however, overcrowding soon became a problem, and many patients were sent to Christchurch for admission to Sunnyside Lunatic Asylum. When this arrangement was terminated, with Westland's acquisition of self-government as a County in 1868, those patients who were unable to be admitted to South Spit were instead sent to the Hokitika Gaol.      

	The first superintendent of Seaview was Hugh Gribben, and his wife, Winifred Gribben was the first matron. From its earliest days onwards, the institution was characterised by the quasi-domestic environment it offered to patients, and a focus on restorative and curative treatments, rather than merely incarceration and segregation. Seaview was run under lay control until 1921, when Dr. H. M. Buchanan was appointed the first Medical Superintendent; under his guidance, Seaview was the first psychiatric hospital in New Zealand to adopt the villa system, and was the first to be rebuilt entirely following that model. 

	In 1972 administrative control of Seaview switched from the Department of Health to the West Coast Hospital Board - now the West Coast District Health Board. With the move in New Zealand towards deinstitutionalised, community-based care for the mentally ill from the early 1990s, services at Seaview were gradually reduced, and the hospital finally closed in 2009.
