	The New Zealand Milk Board, Christchurch District Office was established in December 1953, when the Board was given the power to appoint its own staff and manage its own affairs under the Milk Amendment Act 1953. Mr. J. W. Langford was appointed the first District Manager (known initially as the Christchurch Regional Officer).1

	The office was responsible for fulfilling the Board's functions and responsibilities - primarily the provision of an adequate supply of milk of good quality for human consumption, and the organisation of the town milk industry within the Board's Christchurch administrative area, which covered the Canterbury and Westland regions. Activities carried out within the area included the administration of the national milk scheme, selection and approval of milk vendors, and the administration of distribution zoning schemes.

	In the 1950’s the Board was responsible for the rural milk districts, while the borough and city councils operated as milk authorities in the urban areas. The Board took over this function from the local authorities in 1960 or 1961.

	The Christchurch administrative area consisted of the following milk districts (as established under the Milk Districts Order 1968):

	

		Buller;
	

		Reefton;
	

		Westland;
	

		North Canterbury;
	

		Mid Canterbury; and
	

		South Canterbury.2


	As part of deregulation of the town milk industry, the Christchurch District Office closed in late 1987, although one officer was retained to oversee winding down activities until early 1988. Deregulation of the industry culminated with the Milk Act 1988, which officially disestablished the New Zealand Milk Board and all its offices on 1 April 1988.
