The District Engineers were responsible for implementing the policy and occupational aspects of the telecommunications network in the area under their control. This included such services as the installation of cables and aerial lines, fixing of telephone faults, provision of private telephone lines, operation of the telegram system and telephone system and provision of other customer telecommunications services.
Under the Post Office Act 1959, the Post and Telegraph Department was renamed The Post Office with an organisational structure which included an Engineer-in-Chief who was in charge of the Engineering Branch (previously known as the Telegraph Branch - control of telegraph, telephone and radio plants and workshops), and 5 Superintending Engineers of Planning, Field, Telephone, Transmission and Radio.  The Engineer-in-Chief also controlled 3 Regional Engineers Offices and 14 District Engineers Offices (Lines & Cables Construction & Maintenance, Telephone, Construction & Maintenance, Workshops, Drawing Office, Clerical, and Radio).
