Administrative History (ex-Auckland document):
The New Zealand Pastoral Agricultural Research Institute Ltd (Ag Research) is one of a number of New Crown Research Institutes created on 1 July 1992. Ag Research's expertise is pastoral Agriculture and replaces MAF Technology pastoral research groups, DSIR Grasslands and DSIR Plant Protection.
The New Zealand Pastoral Agricultural Research Institute has five major research centres at Ruakura, Palmerston North, Wallaceville, Lincoln and Invermay, with a small head office team based at Ruakura (Hamilton).
Each centre will concentrate on a specific research topic. Ruakura's major focus will be on improving animal performance through the underlying growth and development of animals.

The New Zealand Pastoral Agriculture Research Institute was made up of all of the DSIR Grasslands Division (ABMC) and parts of the DSIR Plant Protection Division (ABMS), including forage species and plant protection.
All activities concerning pastoral and animal research, weed, pest and disease control form MAF Technology Division (ABLM) were also transferred to this institute. This included all animal and plant related research locations at:
- Wallace Animal Research Centre
- Ruakura Agriculture Centre
- Hopuhopu Animal Quarantine Research Station
- Moanatuatua Pest Research Centre
- Rukuhia Grazing Trails
- Whatawhata Hill Country Research Station
- Tokanui Research Station
- Waikeria Dwelling
- New Plymouth Laboratory
- Normanby Dairy Farm (Hawera)
- Flockhouse Agriculture Centre
