Dick was appointed by the Department of Scientific Research to organise statistical work, the outbreak of the war effectively prevented him from this, as he was assigned other duties. In 1946 he was able to return to his original work of establishing the Biometrics Section.
By 1949 biometrics had been stationed at Mt Albert and Lincoln. In 1950 the Biometrics Section adopted the title Applied Mathematics Laboratory. It subsequently became known as the Applied Mathematics Division.
On 1 July 1992 the Applied Mathematics Division was disestablished following the disestablishment of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the creation of new Crown Research Agencies.
