The establishment date of the New Zealand Fire Service, Region 2 Headquarters, is based on the commencement date of the Fire Service Act 1975, 1 April 1976. The New Zealand Fire Service, Region 2 Headquarters was established on 1 April 1976, and was primarily responsible for the co-ordination of the operational units (full-time and volunteer fire brigades) within the No.2 Fire Region, which covered the Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. It took over the functions of the various fire boards and urban fire district authorities within the region, including the Hamilton Fire Board, Waihi Fire Board, and the Otorohanga Urban Fire Authority.

No.2 Regional Headquarters, based in Hamilton, was headed by a Regional Commander, who was assisted by a Regional Secretary.
In 1994/1995 the regional structure of the New Zealand Fire Service was reorganised, with the six fire regions being restructured into three: Northern, Central, and Southern fire regions. This came into effect on 1 July 1995. The No.2 Region was merged into the Northern Fire Region, which had its headquarters based in Auckland.
