	The date of establishment of the Department of Labour, Hamilton Regional Office, was based on information conatined in Public Works Department file PW 24/1376 Part 1. In late 1919 the Department of Labour decided to establish an office in Hamilton and obtained permission to lease a two-room office. The Department occupied the premises from 22 March 1920.

	The Department of Labour, Hamilton Regional Office, was opened in March/April 1920.1

	The Office carried out the Department’s responsibilities in the Waikato region, which included:

	Sustainable employment: Helping build the capacity of local communities and assisting them to identify and achieve new opportunities for ongoing employment and community involvement;

	Employment Relations: Providing information and support to local employers, employees, unions and workplaces on employment relations matters; helping local employers and employees to improve productivity and resolve employment problems in workplaces; supporting the operation of employment relations legislation and enforcing employment standards locally;

	Workplace Health and Safety: Working to reduce work-related death and injury rates, and supporting local employers and employees in productive work; providing information and guidance to workplaces on occupational safety and health issues and managing hazardous substances; enforcing health and safety legislation locally.2
