	Havelock North School provided primary education for the children of Havelock North town located near Hastings in the Hawkes Bay Provincial District. As early as 1863 a private day and boarding school under the tutorship of J. Reynolds was established at Havelock North. To accommodate the growing numbers of children of school age, a modest school was built in 1864. J. Reynolds was appointed Master with a roll of 26 pupils. Numbers fluctuated over the years, in 1867 the roll had fallen to 10 pupils but recovered to a total of 21 the following year in 1868.

	By 1878 a new school had been built and a local school committee elected. Swimming baths were built on the school grounds in 1923. New classsrooms were added in 1953. In 1958 Te Mata School closed and the pupils transferred to Havelock North. Later in 1963, Lucknow School closed, the pupils added to the Havelock School roll. Further improvements to the school included a new school hall in 1969, a new library in 2006, and new classroom blocks added in 2020 and 2017 respectively. By 2016 Havelock North Primary School had a roll of 534 pupils.
