Annat School, located in the Orange Hall in the Annat Village Settlement was established by the North Canterbury Education Board in 1882 to serve the growing population of the area. In September 1882, the Education Board agreed to the temporary appointment of a mistress to the School, with a Mrs C. T. Blythen being confirmed in the position in December that year.
Between 1883 and 1885, Mr E. J. Jaggar also taught there, and the school was a subsidiary (side school) to the Malvern School. In 1884 the Malvern School Committee reported that it would supply desks, forms, stationery and fuel to the Annat School, and recommended a Miss Grant to the Education Board as the sewing mistress for the School.
By early 1885, it was clear that Annat School had been removed from the jurisdiction of the Malvern School Committee, and was being governed by its own separate School Committee - Annat having also been granted separate status by the Education Board with its own School District. It is clear from the newspapers that this change in governance wasn't without its detractors, and may have taken place because of a religious divide within the wider Malvern district.
The use of the Orange Hall ceased in April 1886, and a new school building opened on March 5, 1886, on the site of a former gravel reserve. The opening was celebrated in the evening with a concert and ball at the Orange Hall.
In April, 1936 a 50th Jubilee celebration was held for the school, culminating in a ball at Sheffield Hall.
After almost 70 years of operation, and in response to declining rolls, Annat School was closed in January 1949, and consolidated with Waddington School, thereafter renamed Sheffield School - this plan having first been discussed as early as 1941.
