The Auckland Policy Office was established in 2005, when the Ministry of Economic Development recognised that Auckland was becoming more important for New Zealand. A group of four agencies set up a shared office where they could work together on Auckland related issues requiring cross-agency collaboration.
From 2015 the Auckland Policy Office came under the administrative control of the State Services Commission, and in 2020 nine agencies were represented in the Office as follows:
- State Services Commission
- Department of Internal Affairs
- Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
- Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment
- Ministry for the Environment
- Ministry of Justice
- Ministry for Pacific Peoples
- Ministry of Social Development
- Ministry of Transport.
Being part of the Office provided agencies with:
- a community in which to share and coordinate policy
- a facility where connections can be fostered and government can connect with the needs of Auckland and its communities
- system wide view of Auckland for central government.
