The Clinton Resident Magistrate's Court was probably established in the 1880s, following calls by Clinton residents for a court to be established in their town.
The Magistrate's Courts were given ordinary civil jurisdiction over claims not exceeding £100, and a special jurisdiction over matters such as a partnership of accounts up to £200.
There were suggestions that the court be closed in 1903 and 1908, but it wasn't until 1932 when the court was finally closed and the records were transferred to the Gore Magistrate's Court.
