	Courts (Warden’s, Magistrate's and Supreme) were established in the Westland area in response to the influx of population as a result of the gold rush which began in 1864.

	The Karamea Warden's and Magistrates Courts look to have opened in about 1908.

	Warden's Courts were responsible for the local management of gold mining and the resolution of disputes, and also for the allocation of residential and business sites, water rights, the administration of agricultural and pastoral leases, and in some instances, the hearing of civil and criminal suits within their districts.

	Magistrates’ Courts were established in New Zealand in 1846 and were known until 1893 as Resident Magistrates’ Courts. These constituted the lowest rung on the New Zealand court hierarchy and had a combined civil and criminal jurisdiction which grew steadily during the 19th and 20th centuries. The registrars of the Magistrates' Courts undertook a number of other government functions, including the registration of births, deaths and marriages. The Magistrates’ Courts dealt with minor criminal cases and civil suits under a certain level. The courts also heard cases for maintenance.

	In the 20th century Children’s Courts also operated as divisions of the Magistrates' Courts, and family matters were also heard.  Miscellaneous functions carried out by the officers of the Magistrates' Courts at various times included the registration of pawnbrokers and secondhand dealers, the registration of vaccinations, and assessing applications for certain pensions.

	It is unclear when Karamea ceased to have any court functions, though Archives New Zealand's Christchurch Office holds Magistrate's Court records from Karamea dating to 1971.
