The Geraldine Magistrate's Court was established in 1877, with sittings held in the Geraldine Courthouse. Prior to 1877, the Timaru Magistrate's Court held jurisdiction over the Geraldine area.
Magistrates’ Courts were established in New Zealand in 1846 and were known until 1893 as Resident Magistrates’ Courts. These constituted the lowest rung on the New Zealand court hierarchy and had a combined civil and criminal jurisdiction which grew steadily during the 19th and 20th centuries. The registrars of the Magistrates' Courts undertook a number of other government functions, including the registration of births, deaths and marriages. The Magistrates’ Courts dealt with minor criminal cases and civil suits under a certain level. The courts also heard cases for maintenance.
In the 20th century Children’s Courts also operated as divisions of the Magistrates' Courts, and family matters were also heard. Miscellaneous functions carried out by the officers of the Magistrates' Courts at various times included the registration of pawnbrokers and secondhand dealers, the registration of vaccinations, and assessing applications for certain pensions.
From the late nineteenth into the early twentieth century, the licensing functions for the Geraldine district were administered by the Temuka Magistrate's Court.
In the late 1970s the Court was likely closed by the Department of Justice in conjunction with the closure of more than 20 other courts in smaller centres throughout New Zealand, and its functions passed to the Timaru District Court.
